Year 6 - 'A different boy' English topic

To support a smooth transition into secondary school, our Year 6 pupils have been studying the engaging and thought-provoking text A Different Boy by Paul Jennings. As part of a transition unit across our Multi-Academy Trust, the children will continue exploring this novel when they move into Year 7, allowing them to build on the learning they have already begun.

From the very first chapter, the children were captivated by the story's intriguing characters, suspenseful plot and unexpected twists. The dramatic ending sparked some fantastic discussion, as pupils debated who the 'different boy' really was. Many discovered that there was no single right answer, with different interpretations supported by thoughtful evidence from the text. These discussions encouraged the children to think critically, justify their opinions and appreciate how authors can leave room for multiple interpretations.

Throughout the unit, pupils explored the characters' thoughts, feelings and motivations through a range of writing opportunities. They wrote diary entries from a character's perspective, produced a newspaper report about one of the key incidents in the story and analysed how the author gradually revealed clues to build tension and mystery.

To conclude the unit, the children used the structure, or 'bare bones', of the story to create their own narratives. Inspired by Paul Jennings' writing, they crafted suspense-filled stories featuring a flashback that revealed a dark secret from a character's past, changing the reader's understanding of events in the present. This gave the children the opportunity to experiment with narrative structure while developing tension, atmosphere and characterisation.

The creativity on display was outstanding. Year 6 produced imaginative, gripping stories filled with suspense and carefully crafted twists, demonstrating just how much they have grown as writers over the year. Most importantly, they thoroughly enjoyed every stage of the unit and are excited to continue reading A Different Boy when they begin Year 7 at their secondary schools within the Trust.
